Guide

How much should a small-business website actually cost?

The honest answer is a range, because "a website" describes anything from a single page to a custom application. What matters is comparing like with like.

Separate the two numbers

Every website has a build cost and an ongoing cost. Quotes get confusing because providers emphasise whichever number looks better for them.

Build cost

One-time: structure, design, copy, setup and launch.

Ongoing cost

Domain renewal, hosting, and any care or content work.

A low build price with a high monthly fee can cost more over two years than a higher one-off build. Always compare the total.

What moves the price

  • Number of pages. Distinct services need distinct pages.
  • Who writes the copy. Writing is often the largest hidden cost.
  • Integrations. Booking systems and payments add scope.
  • Revisions. Unlimited revisions are usually priced in somewhere.

Compare quotes properly

Ask every provider the same questions: How many pages? Who writes the copy? How many revisions? What recurring fees? Who owns the domain and site? What happens if I leave?

If a quote will not state ongoing costs in writing, that is the answer to your question.
