Who owns your website after you pay for it?

This catches people out years later, usually at the worst moment. Sort it out before work begins, not when you want to leave.

Three separate things

Your domain

The address. This should be in an account you control, in your name.

Your content

Words and images. Should be yours outright once paid for.

The site itself

Depends on the platform — on some, the site cannot be exported at all.

Questions to ask before you hire

  • Whose name is on the domain registration?
  • Do I get admin access to the site?
  • Can the site be exported if I leave?
  • What happens to it if I stop paying monthly?
  • Is anything built on a licence that ends with you?

The honest caveat

Some platforms genuinely cannot be exported in a usable form. That is not necessarily disqualifying — but you should know before you commit, not after.

Anyone unwilling to answer these in writing is telling you something important.
