Compare website quotes on the same lines: pages included, copywriting, design revisions, features, domain and email, hosting and care, SEO setup, timeline, who owns the domain and files, and every recurring fee. Ask for anything missing in writing before you pay.

## Line items to compare

- Page count and which pages
- Copywriting included or you supply text
- Revision rounds
- Features (forms, booking, ordering, gallery)
- Domain, business email, hosting
- Monthly or yearly fees after launch
- Turnaround and what starts the clock
- Ownership of domain, content and files
- Cancellation terms

## Worksheet

Use the website quote comparison worksheet to put quotes side by side.

## Worked example

A roofing company receives three website quotes. The owner lines them up by pages, copywriting, photos, forms, booking or quoting features, domain and hosting, ownership terms, revisions, launch date and ongoing care. One quote is cheaper but excludes copywriting and ownership of content. He chooses the quote with clear ownership and included copywriting.

## Common mistakes

- Comparing totals without scope
- Ignoring recurring charges
- Not checking ownership terms

## Comparison table

| Item | Quote A | Quote B | Quote C |
| Pages | | | |
| Copywriting | | | |
| Photos | | | |
| Forms and booking | | | |
| Domain and hosting | | | |
| Ownership | | | |
| Revisions | | | |
| Launch date | | | |
| Ongoing care | | | |
| Total yearly cost | | | |

## Red flags in website quotes

Be cautious when a quote doesn't name who owns the domain and content, lists "unlimited" revisions without defining them, leaves out hosting or renewal costs, has no launch date, or requires long contracts with heavy cancellation fees. Ask for anything unclear in writing. A good provider is happy to explain what's included, what costs extra and what happens if you leave. Also ask how support works after launch: who updates prices, hours and photos, how quickly, and at what cost. Many small businesses need a few small changes a month, and the cost of those changes adds up over a year.

## Ask about timelines

Ask what the provider needs from you and when, since delays in content often delay launch.

## Common questions

### Why are website quotes so different?

Scope differs: pages, writing, features and ongoing care. Line-by-line comparison shows it.

### What should be in writing?

Scope, price, recurring fees, timeline, revisions and ownership.

### Should I ask for references?

Yes; ask for recent clients in similar businesses.

### What should a contract include?

Scope, price, timeline, ownership, revisions and ongoing costs.

### Is the cheapest quote a bad sign?

Not always; check what's included and what's excluded.

### Should I pay upfront?

Many providers take a deposit; read payment terms before signing.

### Should I sign a long contract?

Prefer clear terms you can exit; ask what happens to your site and domain if you cancel.

### What about maintenance plans?

Compare what each plan covers, such as updates, backups and content edits.

### Should I meet the provider?

A short call helps you judge communication and fit.
