Cheap websites: what is worth paying for?

Affordability and quality can coexist. The trick is knowing which corners are safe to cut and which ones quietly cost you enquiries.

Worth paying for

  • A form that is tested. An untested form is a site that loses every enquiry silently.
  • Working properly on a phone. Most visitors are on one.
  • Real copy about your business. Generic filler does not convert.
  • Clear ownership. Being able to leave without losing your site.

Usually not worth paying for

  • Elaborate animations that slow the page down
  • A blog you will never update
  • Stock photography that could belong to any business
  • Pages for services you do not actually sell

Warning signs

Be cautious when a provider will not state recurring costs in writing, will not say who owns the domain, promises specific rankings, or shows a portfolio of sites that are no longer live.

Cheap becomes expensive when you have to pay someone else to redo it in a year.
