A nonprofit website carries more history than it looks like. The donate page may be printed on a pledge card, the volunteer page linked from a church bulletin and the annual report listed in a funder’s directory. Before a redesign, find those links and decide what happens to each one.
Inventory what exists
List every page and mark who depends on it. Ask development, program and communications staff separately, because each uses different pages. Check printed materials, email signatures and social profiles for the web addresses they point to.
Note what works today: the page that families actually use, the form volunteers actually fill in. Those are the pieces to carry over unchanged in function, even if the look changes.
Sort every page
- ✓Keep and polish — program pages with accurate hours, a working donate page, clear contact details
- ✓Rewrite — mission text that sounds like a grant narrative, stories without dates, thin pages
- ✓Merge — three nearly identical pages about the same program
- ✓Remove — past events and expired campaigns, with a note in your records
Protect addresses and the donation flow
The donate address should keep working exactly as people expect, or forward to the new equivalent. Test it from a printed card, a saved email and a small screen. The tool behind it stays your own; we connect the button and test that the page loads and the gift flow starts.
Where an address has to change, the old one should forward to the new one. We make that map as part of the rebuild and test it before the switch, while your current site remains live.
Launch and review
- ✓Give a small test gift if your tool allows — or open the donation flow and confirm it loads correctly
- ✓Check the volunteer and contact forms — confirm messages reach the right inbox
- ✓Update outside listings — directories, funder directories and social bios should point to the right pages
- ✓Review in a month — look at which pages staff still field questions about
What to expect, honestly
- ✓We cannot promise traffic or giving results — a clearer site helps, outcomes depend on outreach
- ✓We do not edit inside your old site builder — we rebuild on our hosting
- ✓Old data is not promised — send us anything you need carried over
