Who to ask and what to ask
| Office | Question |
|---|---|
| State barber board | What does the shop license require, and what do inspectors check? |
| City zoning | Is a barber shop allowed here? |
| Building department | Do plumbing and electrical changes need permits? |
| State revenue department | Sales tax on products? |
| Labor department | Employee vs renter rules? |
Sanitation routine to post
Clean and disinfect clippers, combs and shears between clients with an appropriate disinfectant for the required contact time; use fresh neck strips and capes; dispose of single-use razor blades in a sharps container; sweep hair between clients; and keep clean and used tools separate. Boards check these practices during inspections, and clients notice them.
Mistakes that cause citations
- Expired barber licenses no one tracked
- Clippers not disinfected between clients
- Reused razor blades
- No sharps container
Renewal calendar
| Item | Reminder |
|---|---|
| Shop license | Board renewal date |
| Barber licenses | Each barber's expiration |
| Booth rental permits | Where required |
| Business license | Local renewal |
Booth renters and compliance
Keep copies of every renter's license and check dates quarterly. In some states the shop can be cited if a renter's license lapses.
Rules owners often miss
Barber boards usually set rules on shop layout, sanitation, sinks, posting of licenses and the services barbers may perform. Some states also regulate chemical services such as color in barber shops. Download your board's rules and walk the shop before the inspection, and keep each barber's license displayed at their station if required.
