You see a price, you sign up, and three months later a renewal notice arrives for something you did not know you had. Or you ask for a new photo on the home page and receive an hourly invoice. These moments make owners distrust every website offer, which is fair. The fix is simple: before you buy, ask about the costs that tend to arrive later, and get the answers in writing.
Use the lists below as a script, whether you are talking to a builder company, a freelancer, an agency or us.
Costs that arrive at renewal time
Introductory pricing is common across web services. A domain, a hosting plan or a builder subscription can start low and renew at a higher regular rate. That is normal, but it should be visible before you agree. Domain privacy, which keeps your personal details out of public lookup records, is sometimes included and sometimes sold separately.
Business email is another one. A matching address at your domain usually comes from a mailbox provider that charges per mailbox, so a team of four may pay four times. Ask how many mailboxes are included and what each extra one costs.
Costs that arrive when you want something new
- ✓Small edits — is a text or photo change included, or billed by the hour
- ✓Extra pages — how much to add a page beyond the original scope
- ✓New features — booking, online payments or a newsletter signup may need a paid tool
- ✓More revision rounds — what happens if the first drafts need more changes than planned
- ✓Design refresh — is a new look a new project
Costs hiding in tools and licenses
Sites built on WordPress often rely on premium themes and plugins that renew yearly. If nobody renews them, updates stop. Builder platforms sometimes put features such as advanced forms, scheduling or store checkout behind higher plans. Booking, ordering and donation tools charge their own subscriptions or per-transaction fees, and payment processors take a cut of every card payment.
Photos are easy to miss too. Stock images need the right license for business use, and a professional shoot is a separate expense. Using an image found in a web search can lead to a takedown request.
Costs that appear when you leave
- ✓Export limits — some platforms cannot move your design elsewhere, only your text and images
- ✓Domain release — confirm the domain is registered in your name, not the vendor’s
- ✓Cancellation terms — notice periods and early-exit fees on annual contracts
- ✓Final backups — ask whether you get a copy of your content on the way out
How we answer these questions
Our build prices are one-time: Launch Website $399 for up to 5 pages, Business Plus $989 for up to 20, Business Extra $1,500 for up to 50, Business Ultra $2,000 for up to 100 and Business Max Growth $3,000 for up to 300. Every package includes a consultation, copy written for you, mobile-friendly design, a contact form, essential search setup and ten revision rounds.
Website Care is $30/month and covers managed hosting, HTTPS, backups, uptime checks, weekly performance checks, A/B testing and up to 30 minutes of small edits each month. What sits outside it: third-party tools such as booking or ordering software bill you directly, larger additions beyond your plan are scoped before any work starts, and Monthly SEO is an optional add-on. Our no hidden fees page lists each item in more detail.
What to expect, honestly
- ✓Third-party fees are set by those providers — we tell you which tools carry them, not what they will charge next year
- ✓Quotes depend on scope — new pages or features beyond your plan are quoted first
- ✓We do not review contracts — for legal terms in another vendor’s agreement, ask your advisor
