Plumbers often redesign after a nephew’s site gets old, or after a customer mentions the site looks wrong on a small screen. Before you rebuild, spend an hour finding out what the current site really does for you. Some of it is worth keeping untouched.
Find out what the old site does
Ask your office staff how new customers say they found you. If they mention the website, ask what they were looking for: a water heater page, your hours, a service area. Those are the pages to keep.
Open the old site on a small screen and try every button yourself. Note anything that breaks, anything that is slow and any information that is wrong now: old prices, former staff, closed locations.
What to keep and what to change
- ✓Keep — page addresses that already get visits, service pages that are accurate, any reviews you copied with permission
- ✓Change — crowded home page, tiny buttons, outdated photos, a form with too many fields
- ✓Add — a clear service area list, a short request form and accurate hours
- ✓Remove — services you no longer offer and promotions that ended
Keep your address and your contact path
If an old page address must change, the old one should forward to the new one so bookmarks, directory listings and old cards still work. We map this out and test it before the new site goes live. Your domain stays registered to you throughout.
Where requests go matters most. Before the switch, confirm the form’s destination and send test messages to the inbox you will be watching. A redesign that looks great and loses requests is worse than the old site.
After the switch
- ✓Send three test requests — from a small screen, with and without a photo
- ✓Click the old links you noted — each should reach a working page
- ✓Update your listings — business profiles, directories and truck lettering should show the same web address
- ✓Look again in a month — ask staff whether new customers are asking different questions
What to expect, honestly
- ✓We rebuild on our hosting — we do not edit inside the old builder
- ✓We do not promise rankings or call volume — a redesign can protect what works, not guarantee more
- ✓Old data is not promised — send anything you need kept
