You have been running the business for decades, and somewhere in that time you set up a website. It works. Nobody else knows how. When you step back, whether by selling, retiring or handing it to a family member, the site becomes a loose thread. A few quiet renewals can lapse, and the whole thing can go dark without anyone noticing.
Start with an access inventory
Write one page listing every piece of the website: the domain registrar, the hosting or builder, the business email, any booking or payment tools and the accounts you use to see visitors or listings. For each one record the provider, what it costs, when it renews and which email it uses.
Do not put passwords into the same document in plain text. Use a password manager or a sealed record kept with your other important papers, and tell one trusted person where it is.
What the handover document should hold
- ✓Provider and account name — so the new owner knows where to log in
- ✓Renewal dates and costs — the dates that quietly cause outages
- ✓Who gets reminder emails — often an old inbox that will not be checked
- ✓Who is allowed to change things — authorized contacts, with names
Name a successor, even if informal
Registrars and hosts usually let you add a second authorized contact or a backup email. Do that now. If you are selling the business, the new owner will need proof of ownership transfer and your cooperation to move accounts into their name.
If a family member or employee is taking over, consider whether they will actually maintain the site. If not, the better plan is a service that does it for them.
What a care plan covers
Website Care at $30/month covers managed hosting, HTTPS, backups, uptime checks, weekly performance checks and up to 30 minutes of small edits per month. That means the person taking over does not need technical skills; they can ask for a change and know the site is monitored.
If your current site lives on a platform you want to leave behind, we rebuild it on our hosting with your wording, logo and photos, and point your domain once the new site is approved. The domain stays in your name until you transfer it to the next owner.
A short plan for the next owner
- ✓Domain in the right name — the successor or the business, with an updated contact email
- ✓A written list of what the site must do — hours, services, forms
- ✓Backups in a place they can reach — so changes can be undone
- ✓One support contact — someone to ask when something breaks
What to expect, honestly
- ✓We do not transfer your legal ownership — that is between you and the buyer
- ✓We cannot recover accounts you cannot reach — registrars set their own recovery rules
- ✓Care covers small edits only — larger projects are scoped separately
