You open your own website on your handset and wince. Text is tiny, you have to pinch to zoom, the menu does not open and the buttons sit too close together to tap. Websites designed years ago were built for a desktop monitor first, and the mobile version was an afterthought, if it existed at all.
Look at it the way a customer does
Take your handset, stand somewhere other than your desk, and try to do the three things a customer wants: find your hours, find how to contact you and see what you do. Time yourself. If any of the three takes more than a few seconds or needs zooming, it is a problem worth fixing.
Try it in both upright and sideways, and on a second device if you can borrow one. Different screens show different flaws.
A quick mobile checklist
- ✓Readable text without zooming — body copy at a comfortable size with plenty of spacing
- ✓Thumb-sized buttons — tap targets large enough to hit without hitting a neighbor
- ✓A menu that opens — simple, short and clearly labeled
- ✓No sideways scrolling — everything fits the screen width
What goes wrong on older sites
Many older sites are fixed-width layouts that simply shrink down, leaving text unreadable. Others have a mobile version bolted on that hides half the content or breaks when a new page is added. Large images, pop-ups that cover the page and tiny links in footers all add up.
Patching these one by one is possible when the site is simple. When the design itself is the problem, a rebuild is quicker than a long list of adjustments.
How we build for small screens first
Every package we sell includes mobile-friendly design, because that is where your visitors are. We design the small screen first, with your call button, directions and main action within easy reach, then let the page grow for larger screens. Your wording, logo and photos carry over, and we write fresh copy where it helps.
The Launch Website is $399 for up to five pages. Website Care at $30/month adds managed hosting, HTTPS, backups and small edits, so the layout stays tidy as you change things.
What helps us
- ✓Screenshots of what looks wrong — from your handset is perfect
- ✓The three things customers must do — call, book, ask for a quote
- ✓Your logo and photos — originals if possible
- ✓Pages you can retire — most small sites have a few nobody visits
What to expect, honestly
- ✓We do not patch inside your old template — the new site is built on our hosting
- ✓Every device is different — we test on common screens, not every model
- ✓Old data is not promised — we rebuild from what you supply
