You tap your own site on your mobile and watch a blank screen while the page assembles itself. You know visitors are watching the same thing and some of them are leaving. It is easy to blame the internet or your device, but slow sites have fairly ordinary causes, and most of them can be seen with a little looking.
Measure before you change anything
Open your homepage on your mobile over cellular data, not wifi, because that is how many customers will see it. Count how long until you can read something. Then try the same on two or three inner pages, since a homepage can be tuned while the rest of the site is a mess.
A free page-speed test gives you a report and a list of items. Do not chase a perfect score; look at the biggest items and ask whether they are the real cause. We never promise a score, since results vary by device, location and test.
The usual suspects
- ✓Oversized photos — pictures straight from a camera, many times bigger than the screen needs
- ✓Cheap shared hosting — a plan crowded with other sites competing for the same resources
- ✓Too many add-ons — each plugin or widget adds files to load
- ✓Heavy embeds — video players, maps, chat bubbles and social feeds on every page
Why a "fix" sometimes is not worth it
Speeding up a slow site can mean compressing images, removing unused add-ons, upgrading hosting and rewriting parts of the template. If the site was built on a bloated theme with many layers of add-ons, every cleanup fights its structure.
A simple, small-business site rarely needs to be heavy. A few pages with properly sized images and one clean template load quickly almost anywhere, which is why a lean rebuild is sometimes the cheapest path.
What we build instead
We rebuild your site on our managed hosting with mobile-friendly, simply built pages, images sized for the screen and only the features you need. Website Care at $30/month includes weekly performance checks and uptime monitoring, so you find out about slowdowns from us instead of from a customer.
We make no promise about a specific speed score. What we do is keep the pages light and the hosting managed, and tell you plainly what is slowing a page when we find it.
Do this before you contact us
- ✓Time three pages on mobile data — homepage, a service page and the contact page
- ✓Note which add-ons you actually use — chat, maps, video, social feeds
- ✓Check image sizes — if a photo is several megabytes, that is a problem
- ✓Ask your host what plan you are on — shared, managed or something else
What to expect, honestly
- ✓No speed score promised — tools and devices give different results
- ✓We do not tune inside your old platform — we rebuild on our hosting
- ✓Third-party embeds have their own weight — we tell you what each one costs in load time
