The short answer

Handyman startup costs are modest compared with other trades: tools, a ladder or two, a vehicle with storage, insurance, business registration and any licenses, lead-safe certification if needed, software for quotes and invoices, and a website. Materials are usually bought per job and billed to the client.

Worked example: setting an hourly rate and minimum

Mike adds monthly costs: insurance, vehicle, phone, software, tool replacement and his target pay. He estimates billable hours per week after driving, quoting and buying materials. Dividing costs plus pay by billable hours gives his minimum hourly rate. Because a twenty-minute job still costs travel time, he sets a minimum charge equal to a set number of hours. He also adds a markup on materials he buys, to cover the time spent shopping and returns.

Should I charge for materials pickup?

Many handymen add a markup or time charge for shopping.

Do I need a van?

An SUV or truck with storage works to start.
