The short answer

Painting startup costs are moderate: ladders, drop cloths, brushes and rollers, a quality sprayer, masking supplies, RRP certification and containment supplies if you work on older homes, insurance and a vehicle. Paint is usually priced into each job. Track labor hours per room to learn your real production rate.

Worked example: room estimate

Wall areaperimeter × height − openings
Paintarea × coats ÷ coverage per gallon
Laborarea ÷ your production rate + prep hours

Overhead and profityour margin

Equipment priorities

  • Ladders and planks for safe access
  • Airless sprayer once volume justifies it
  • HEPA vacuum and containment for lead-safe work
  • Quality brushes and rollers

Cash flow and deposits

Many painters take a deposit to schedule the job and buy materials, then bill the balance at completion. Follow your state's rules on deposits for home improvement contracts. For large commercial jobs, progress billing keeps cash flowing.

Worked example: estimating a bedroom

Jordan measures wall area, subtracts large openings, and estimates paint by the coverage on the product label for two coats. He adds primer for patched areas, caulk, tape, plastic and a share of brushes and rollers. Labor includes moving furniture, prep, cutting in, rolling, trim and cleanup, timed from his past jobs. He adds overhead and margin and writes the estimate with each step listed so the customer sees what is included.
