Maybe a customer mentioned they could not read your site, or you just want it to work for more people. Accessibility is about whether someone using a screen reader, a keyboard instead of a mouse, magnified text or a small screen can get what they came for. Much of it comes down to everyday choices in how a page is built.
What tends to make a difference
Readable text matters first: a comfortable size, strong contrast between text and background and short paragraphs. Next are headings in a logical order so a screen reader can jump through a page, descriptions for images that carry meaning and links that say where they go instead of just click here.
Forms need clear labels, and buttons need to work with a keyboard as well as a finger. Video and audio benefit from captions or a transcript.
Things you can check yourself
- ✓Increase the text size on your mobile device — does the layout still hold together
- ✓Press Tab through a page — can you reach every link and see where you are
- ✓Squint at the page — can you still read the main text
- ✓Read a link out of context — would it still make sense
- ✓Look for images with text in them — a screen reader cannot read those
What we can do and what we cannot say
We build with these practices in mind: mobile-friendly layouts, readable type, labeled forms and sensible headings. For an existing site, we can rebuild it onto our managed hosting with these points applied, working from the content you supply.
We do not claim that a site meets a legal standard, and we cannot give legal advice about your obligations. Improving usability is worthwhile work, but a full audit against a specific standard is a separate matter and may need a specialist.
What to tell us
- ✓Who has had trouble — a customer, a staff member, or your own testing
- ✓Which pages matter most — the ones people need to use
- ✓Documents on the site — PDFs and menus are often hard to read
- ✓Third party tools you embed — booking or payment tools we do not control
What to expect, honestly
- ✓No compliance claims — we do not certify any standard
- ✓Embedded third party tools vary — their accessibility is theirs
- ✓Legal questions go to a professional — we do not advise on obligations
