Sending a quote from a free personal inbox works, but it can feel casual next to a website with your business name on it. An address on your own domain tells people where you work. It also gives you something that moves with the business, rather than something tied to a login you set up years ago.
What you need before email on your domain makes sense
Three pieces: a domain name registered to you, a mailbox provider that hosts your inboxes and a few settings that point your domain at that provider. The provider is a separate service from the website host, so mailboxes are priced and supported by that provider.
When we build your site we can help you set up email alongside it and make sure the settings do not interfere with the website. Fees for the mailboxes themselves belong to the mailbox provider.
Decisions to make
- ✓Which addresses you want — your name, info, quotes, or one per person
- ✓How many mailboxes — each person usually needs their own
- ✓Where you read it — a mail app, a browser or a desktop program
- ✓Whether to forward old mail — keeping your existing address working for a while
Moving what you already have
If you have years of mail in a free inbox, you can usually copy it to the new mailbox rather than losing it. It is worth doing carefully: export or copy first, switch second, and keep the old inbox open until you have confirmed new messages arrive.
Tell your contacts about the change and update the address on your website, business cards, invoices and any online listings. For a while, set the old address to forward so nothing is missed.
Avoid these common slips
- ✓Changing the domain settings without checking mail — a wrong setting can stop messages arriving
- ✓Letting the domain registration lapse — email and website stop together
- ✓Using one shared password — separate mailboxes are easier to manage
- ✓Forgetting a backup contact — keep recovery options on the account
What to expect, honestly
- ✓We do not guarantee mail delivery to every inbox — receiving providers make their own decisions
- ✓Mailbox fees belong to the provider — they are separate from your website plan
- ✓We cannot recover a lost account password — the provider controls that
