A site launch is more than pages. Behind it sit your domain name, the place it is registered, where your email lives and who holds the keys. Getting those right is the difference between a business you control and one tied to whoever built your site.
The three pieces
The domain is your address, such as yourbusiness.com, registered for a term, usually a year at a time, and renewed at the registrar. Hosting is the server that serves your pages. Email is the mailbox, which may be with a different provider altogether.
We make sure the domain is registered in your business name and that you hold the login. Changing where it points does not change who owns it.
What we confirm at launch
- ✓Registrant name — your business, not ours or a past designer
- ✓Renewal date — so you know when it needs paying
- ✓Mailbox provider — where your email lives and who bills it
- ✓Where it points — the new site, with the old one kept until ready
Email that keeps working
If you have a mailbox on your current domain, we avoid disrupting it. Before pointing the domain at the new site, we note your email records so they keep working. Mailbox terms belong to your email provider: its storage, its fees and its renewal.
At handover you receive a short summary: the domain, the registrar, the renewal date and what we manage through Website Care. Keep it somewhere safe with your other business records.
What to gather
- ✓Domain registrar login — or the name of the company that holds it
- ✓Current email provider — and who administers it
- ✓A preferred address style — such as info or your name
- ✓Any redirects needed — old addresses that must keep working
What to expect, honestly
- ✓No transfer of locked domains — the registrar must release them
- ✓No mailbox fees included — your email provider bills those
- ✓No domain purchase control — the domain stays with you
One example of what your site could look like
